Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, is the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church and the first American to hold the papacy. He was elected on May 8, 2025, following the death of Pope Francis.
Before becoming pope, Prevost had a long career as a missionary, parish priest, teacher, and bishop, particularly in Peru, where he also acquired citizenship. He served as Bishop of Chiclayo and later as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops at the Vatican, overseeing the vetting of bishops worldwide. He is a member of the Augustinian order, making him one of the few popes from a religious order, and he identifies strongly with the teachings of St. Augustine, emphasizing love, unity, humility, and community
